Flooded Bridges is for information only. Always obey posted road closures, barricades, and emergency officials. Never drive or walk through flood water. Turn around, don’t drown.
These terms apply to the Flooded Bridges website at floodedbridges.com (the “Site”), which is owned and operated by ASPR (“we”, “us”). By using the Site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Site.
1. Information only, not a safety service
The Site shows water levels and our estimate of whether a road or bridge near a monitoring site may be affected by high water. It is a convenience, not an official source. It is not an emergency, traffic, or public-safety service, and it does not replace road signs, barricades, official closures, weather warnings, or instructions from police, fire, emergency management, or road authorities.
A bridge or road shown as “CLEAR” may still be closed, flooded, or unsafe, and one shown as “FLOODING” may be passable. Conditions can change faster than the Site updates. You are responsible for your own decisions and safety.
2. Where the information comes from
Water levels come from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), or for tidal gages from the National Weather Service (NWS), and flood levels from the NWS. Much of this data is provisional and may be delayed, missing, estimated, or revised. The Site updates on a schedule, so what you see may be minutes or hours old.
The bridge status (such as CLEAR, FLOODING SOON, FLOODING, and CLEAR SOON) is our own estimate based on that data. It is not an official determination by USGS, NWS, or any government agency, and those agencies do not endorse the Site.
3. Time predictions may change often
Predicted flooding and clearing times are experimental. We are still working to determine the best way to predict them, and they may be wrong by a wide margin, or missing, while we tune the results. Do not rely on them.
4. No warranties
The Site and everything on it are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don’t promise that the Site will be available, uninterrupted, or error-free.
5. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, ASPR will not be liable for any damages of any kind arising from or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Site or its information, including any injury, loss of life, property damage, vehicle damage, delay, or lost time, whether based on contract, tort (including negligence), or any other theory, even if we were told such damages were possible. Some places don’t allow certain limitations, so some of this may not apply to you.
6. Acceptable use
You may use the Site for your own personal, non-commercial purposes. You agree not to:
- scrape, harvest, or copy the Site’s content or statuses by automated means (bots, crawlers, or scripts), or use the Site’s internal services from anywhere other than the Site itself;
- try to reverse engineer, decompile, or work out the methods we use to determine statuses or predictions;
- overload, disrupt, or try to gain unauthorized access to the Site or the systems behind it;
- resell, republish, or build a competing product from the Site or its output without our written permission;
- use the Site in any way that breaks the law.
7. Ownership
The Site, including its design, text, software, the Flooded Bridges™ name and logo, and the methods used to determine statuses and predictions, is owned by ASPR and protected by intellectual property laws, including trade secret law. Nothing in these terms gives you any right to use our name, logo, or methods.
USGS and NWS data is public information from the U.S. government. Maps are provided by Google and are subject to Google’s terms (opens in a new tab).
8. Your information
- We don’t have accounts and don’t ask for your name or email to use the Site.
- The locations you save are stored only in your own browser, on your device.
- When you search, the ZIP code, place name, or (if you choose “Use my location”) your approximate position, rounded to about half a mile, is used only to find nearby locations. Your browser asks your permission before sharing your position.
- We keep a record of which monitoring sites are being viewed, but not who is viewing them, so we know which ones to keep updating.
- We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts visits without cookies. Our hosting providers keep standard technical logs.
- If a page runs into a technical error, it sends us a short error report so we can fix it: the error message, the page, the Site’s version, your screen size, and your browser’s name and version. It doesn’t include your saved locations, searches, location, or anything that identifies you.
9. Changes
We may change the Site, or stop offering it, at any time. We may also update these terms; the date at the top shows when they last changed. Using the Site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New Jersey, and you agree to their jurisdiction.
